Salento -- Cocora -- Salento

i´m in yet another historic little small town in the hills of cafetera called Filandia. rain came just after i arrived so i've been using the time wisely to swill incredible espresso, eat a big breakfast/lunch and update the site. bivied just outside of Salento last night to save some pesos and get back some of the hardness that i used to have: i've been spoiled and have been going too easy on myself. but this is a country of tranquillo y disfruita... its telling me to relax, enjoy! "no, you must suffer", from somewhere it comes.

yesterday was insane and i wish that i'd been able to give it another couple of days, the plan was laid, but certain elements didn't cooperate... es la vida, en shallah... another time. but check out a few of these pics. i decided to stick around Salento as a last minute option to rest the legs a bit and just do a local journey. headed up canyon to a natural sanctuary called Cocora where these interesting palms grow to amazing heights. from this outpost i continued up, and i do mean "up", 5-kms and over 2000 more feet elevation gain to a post called La Montaña at 9750' and up into the Cloud Forest. the views were spectacular and i was lucky to get any at all because it was completely socked in when i arrived at 4pm, but a breeze blew up, the clouds lifted and the peaks emerged for about 30-mins only. the climb was intense, dirt and rock cobbled, and i was carrying all my gear since i intended to stay, but the price was too high, there was no place to even bivy, and the weather was getting nasty. all things considered i made a good choice to descend and get in a good day today traveling back in the cafetera region. i would have been stuck up there in the rain and on roads i'd hate to imagine when wet.

those trees!

Stats: 38-kms, 3:55 (>4000' of climbs).
